Tiffany notes ringAs Manhattan windows go, their size is unimposing and the ground-level vantage point is hardly panoramic. But their exquisite miniature vistas attract hundreds of thousands of viewers. They are
tiffanysand Company’s windows — three facing 57th Street and two on Fifth Avenue — and for four decades they reflected the wit and whimsy of Gene Moore, a pioneer who took them from mere jewelry displays to an art form. Humor and sophistication are Tiffany window traditions(

Known as Woody (he trained in forestry), Mr. Shimko selected woodland scenes — with birds as stars — for his debut. He and the artist he chose, Elliott J. Arkin, a sculptor, of Brooklyn Heights, fashioned a gospel choir of ducks with an organ-playing parrot, a rooster Santa on his Christmas Eve flight and a flock of penguins celebrating New Year’s Eve in Times Square.
Customers often remark on the windows; some send fan mail. Mr. Shimko said he got especially good responses to his Halloween display, featuring a headless torso holding a head, and his Mother’s Day scene of a clothesline with tiny T-shirts.
The opulent
tiffany jewellery that fills the store is understated in its windows, appearing on the sly and wry. “There’s a spot that would call for using rhinestones,” Mr. Shimko said of the holiday display, “but we’re putting in some small rubies and emeralds instead. Somebody out there will pick up on that.
