I saw Bruce Springsteen on the news this morning (he's re-releasing his first hit album "Born to Run") and I have never understood the apparent greatness of "Born to Run". Rolling Stone wrote "This is what rock and roll music should sound like" at the time it was released. My resounding feelings were "it's okay" when I first heard it. Now granted I was in diapers in the 80's, so maybe I just didn't "get" it and need be in the moment for me to like it.

Other songs I think are overrated? Anything by Coldplay (hey, I'm being civil here), specifcally "The Scientist", (I prefer the MadTV version "The Narcissist"), and "Clocks". I have a unexplicable love for "Don't Panic" and "Speed of Sound", but anything else makes me want go to sleep.

Any once else have anything they'd like to share. Seeing as this forum is underpopulated, I'll probably just end posting back and forth to myself ;) But if anyone's out there...

Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana is the most overrated song because it was not good then and it's even worse now and this song does not earn the reverence of some of the greatest songs of all time like Hotel California and I Can't Get No Satisfaction

I disagree, smells like teen spirit is an amazing song if you're into that kind of music. It's all about what you like. I don't think its nirvana's best song but it is good.

I agree that anything Coldplay is overrated. I mean, I listen to them on occasion, but they're really not worth all the hype..

well i like coldplay's sound simply because like you said it is good to go asleep to but i like to mellow out while listening to Coldplay, i just feel "Yellow" sometimes ;)

Yeah, I agree on some of those songs but the band that i think is overated is The Darkness. They are 'wannabe' AC/DC and i just think their songs should have been played then not now. I hear their songs being played on the radio non-stop and i just thought i'd get it off my chest.

Anything Coldplay or U2. Never been huge fans and while I can admit that both groups are great musicians I do not think that they are any more stelar than most out there!

In my "Humble" opinion, any rap not in any way associated with Kanye West or Jay-Z is over rated. I just cant see the point in a meaningless, mono-beat-inous, song about how rich you are or how easy the bitches and hoes are.

I am convinced that any song by Justin Timberlake is over-rated, I mean in his most recent songs he sounds like a girl (eg bexy back)

Diablostar: What must be understood about "...Teen Spirit" is that it isn't considered great because of the musicality of the song, and "Teen Spirit" can in NO way match the composition and harmony of Hotel California, but it's considered great because it ushered in the Seattle Grunge Era, which led to the downfall of metal as we knew it.

roxMYsox: halle-friggin-lujah as far as your comments about JT. He can sorta dance, but he's trying to be Michael Jackson, and he cannot be MJ. Another thing: NOONE, especially some boy-band kid disses a Jackson like he dissed Janet. You don't diss The Jacksons...the Jackson diss you. JT can eat it. Without Timbaland, JT would be nothing....think about it: What was JT's last big hit that Timbaland didn't produce?

Oops, I completely overlooked the whole purpose of this thread, so here goes...

Overrated song? Closer by Nine Inch Nails, and only because of the lyrics in the hook. ("I wanna **** you like an animal") It's a good track, but it overshadows some REALLY good work by Trent & Co.

There are a lot of songs that stack high on the Universal and Fundamental Brownback Scale of Overratedness. Here are a few that come to mind:

Blue October - Hate Me
Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends
Stone Sour - Through The Glass
Super Wipes of A - Dylan The Worshiper

Don't get me wrong, some of those songs are enjoyable in small doses. It's unfortunate that the small doses usually turns fatal shortly after injection. (What I mean is, the song is longer than the length of time that Brownback can enjoy it.)

Hero/Heroine, by Boys Like Girls.
I know a lot of people love this song.
A friend suggested it to me once, saying it was "Amazing..The Best Song Ever."
Are we talking about the same song?
Don't get me wrong, it's alright.
Maybe I just don't like it because I'm into some harder stuff.
Or maybe I just despise the way everyone is suddenly the biggest Boys Like Girls Fan.
But whatever.
In my humble opinion, it's just not all it's cracked up to be.

I was listening to that song on purevolume before Boys Like Girls even released the album last August.
Then when it came on the radio, all of my friends were amazed by this "new" song.
I think The Great Escape by them is more overrated, though.

Why isn't there ever a bad review for a Beck album? Some great songs, but many whiny, introspective, drivel played to dozens of unique sounds. There are too many holes in each album to listen to thorughout. Make yourself an upbeat best of and downtempo best of and you'll be set.
