Very quickly, optimism became the status quo for the young lady. The tumor and some of its side effects are something Sheila deals with on a daily basis yet she is grateful for each day of life.
This attitude and outlook on life is a reflection of Sheila’s spirit and hunger for life. The upbeat and energetic music she makes features rock-pop compositions that come bursting out at you, they’re right in front of you, and you cannot ignore it. Shelia says “ I don't notice the shape of things, I just take in their weight." Well, you can feel the weight of her soul and the intensity in her voice when she sings, every word counts.
Music has always been a part of Sheila's story, but not everyone has heard what is behind the music. As it turns out this story happens to be one of the more compelling and inspiring another artist that may be facing adversities needs to hear. Anyone for that matter, that has overcome a life threatening health issue can relate to what Sheila has overcome and continues to live with everyday. So not only is this special individual someone to draw strength and inspiration from, you can find all of that bubbling up through her music and words.
After her involvement in the Christian music scene as an indie artist for sometime and then releasing an independent debut album in 2000, Sheila took another road in her life where music suddenly took a back seat. College became her first priority, because every artist, particular indie, needs a contingency plan so they can eat. As fate would have it and the fact that you cannot avoid your destiny, Sheila landed at Houston Baptist University, where she majored in both English and Art and took up oil painting, which brought her back full circle to the music career she turned her back on. Sheila summarizes her state of mind during that time: "I was in a place during those years where people I'd run into would ask about my music and I would literally tell them well, that was in another life.” This was difficult for her to swallow, as by definition she was a singer her entire life. At 5 yrs old, she knew who she was, and now found herself far away from the music that was her very essence. All the questions of life came up for Sheila, wondering whether or not she could still refer to herself as a singer/songwriter even though a new song had not seen the light of day for two years.
Finding her soul mate was the missing link for Sheila and when that happened everything became crystal clear. After getting married to her now guitar player, Michael Hurst, on Easter weekend of 2005, Sheila got the itch to get back on stage and get back into the life that she knows has been her calling all along. Michael was right their encouraging her to scratch that itch and start exploring those familiar feelings again. With time, Sheila began to see that confining herself to one focus was debilitating for an artistic individual. So now she does it all-sings, records, paints, every day is full and rewarding because there is nothing holding her back from living a life that is right on track. Its all in the music, just listen to the groove of the sounds and soak up the lyrics and there you will find Sheila Swift living her life.
