Hm.. I always think of the Verve as one of those who came after the fall of Alternative Rock - when it wandered into a whinier realm (late 90s) and left the gothic/punk/grunge flavor of the early nineties. But that's just me. I'd also put Nirvana and Soundgarden under Grunge (I'm always torn with Pearl Jam - they're often too mellow to call grunge, even if Eddie Vedder was born for it).
