The Rolling Stones themselves experimented with country music, and made the classics "Dead Flowers" and "Honky Tonk Women". A genre known as country-rock was even invented, spearheaded by the influence of the great Gram Parsons, who was a short-term member of The Byrds. Some country musicians, such as Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, have also been profoundly influenced by the rock mindset and rebelled against the expectations of Nashville. And Uncle Tupelo, the predecessor to both Son Volt and Wilco, sparked the alternative country movement in the late 80s and early 90s.
