I came of musical age about the time that disco had just died. No joke- one of my earliest memories was of some 'punk' looking dude in a 'Disco is Dead' t-shirt. As a genre, disco doesn't really get any respect, but is an endless source of jokes and retro parties. Which just goes to show you, that even though it's not taken seriously, a lot of people still love dancing to it. I also think our idea of what disco is has been shaped too much by AM radio, K-Tel compilations, and over-the-hill DJs playing at weddings and disco Wednesdays at the local suburban danceclub. There was actually quite a lot of what could be considered 'serious' dance music, especially found in the collection of Larry Levan and West End Records.
I've put together a collection here that has all the classic hits, but also a good sampling of West End tracks like Heartbeat, Sessomatto and Time. Get on your diamond shoes and dance!
