Max Surban worked the machines in his native Cebu before becoming a professional singer. He started singing in nightclubs in Cebu City, before coming to Manila in 1968. He had been given a stint to entertain troops in Saigon during the Vietnam War. Upon returning to Manila, he formed a vocal group known as the Neophonic Band.
