A funeral isn't about being down tempo and somber. It's about remembering a life, defining moments and good times. In this playlist I chose songs to reflect parts of my life and ones that I thought would make for a kick-ass funeral. So I thought, why not explain each song so the listener can have a chance to figure out why this is my funeral playlist.
High and Dry - Radiohead: I told myself, I'm not going to die unless they play Radiohead at my funeral. What song's better than High and Dry? It's melacholy and blandness yet spirited and lifting at the same time. When Thom Yorke reaches for the chorus "Don't leave me high and Dry" it just sends shivers down your spine.
I am trying to Break Your Heart - Wilco: The title's quite self explanitory, it just registers that maybe not everyone at my funeral is there to make sure I'm dead, but to say maybe goodbye in a sense to all my friends and stuff.
Something in the night - Bruce Springsteen: It makes me feel great, like I'm riding the street, and that no one forgets, and most importantly, the world keeps going, the lyrics are posted here to also give you a better idea
I'm riding down Kingsley,
figuring I'll get a drink
Turn the radio up loud,
so I don't have to think,
I take her to the floor,
looking for a moment when the world
seems right,
And I tear into the guts,
of something in the night.
You're born with nothing,
and better off that way,
Soon as you've got something they send
someone to try and take it away,
You can ride this road 'till dawn,
without another human being in sight,
Just kids wasted on
something in the night.
Nothing is forgotten or forgiven,
when it's your last time around,
I got stuff running 'round my head
That I just can't live down
When we found the things we loved,
They were crushed and dying in the dirt.
We tried to pick up the pieces,
And get away without getting hurt,
But they caught us at the state line,
And burned our cars in one last fight,
And left us running burned and blind,Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley: The title pretty much sums it up, a last goodbye. Jeff's voice is melodic and seducing and frankly it's almost the perfect song for a funeral.
The End - The Doors: This was pretty much Jim Morrison's farewell wave, it signifies how I'll go, and how I hope it's one freaky pipe dream.
Space Oddity - David Bowie: The same deal with Radiohead. I said I wouldn't die unless they played Bowie at my funeral. But as a note, only play this if I die of a drug overdose, or errr a spaceship misshap.
Rebellion (lies)- Arcade Fire Frankly, I have this song in every playlist, the album was about dying the songs about dying and funerals are about dying so err it makes perfect sense.
This is the one - Stone Roses: It just feels right. I'm not religous or anything, matter of fact I'm quite an atheist but I find the concept of waiting for people alluring and this is what this song is about
Needle in the Hay - Elliot Smith probably one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. The guy stabbed himself in the heart. twice. so yeah. funeral = sad.
The Late Greats - Wilco In this song Jeff Tweedy talks about the musicians who were the greatest but will never be heard. I like to relate that to those who have possessed a great heart or are great people, but there just ordinary everyday people, they won't be seen on t.v., heard on the radio or read about in the history books, but they all made a positive impact. I of course will be freakin famous when I die however.
Ghost - Neutral Milk Hotel Damn fine song, it's about a ghost. so uhhh go figure.
