FIQL Pick Rolling Stone's Best Albums Of 2006
As perhaps the granddaddy of rock mags, Rolling Stone's end of the year list of best albums is sure to be a lightning rod for amateur and pro music critics and other fans alike. As perhaps the granddaddy of rock mags, Rolling Stone's end of the year list of best albums is sure to be a lightning rod for amateur and pro music critics and other fans alike. While it certainly doesn't reflect my best of list (heavens, now wouldn't that be a challenge) and has a lot of 'huh?' moments, it makes for an interesting starting point-- both for playlisting and discussion.

Basically, I think the list is pretty awful. My main critique is that it plays way to safe and kind to veteran rockers like Dylan, Springsteen, Fats Domino, Willie Nelson, RHCP, and Pearl Jam(?!?), and giving nods to rather weak R&B and hip-hop artists, while ignoring much of the best indie and non-US music. There are one or two safe indie bands thrown in, and much of the time better bands often sneak in with weak follow-up albums to genuinely good releases (YYYs, Phoenix). And seriously, where is Gnarls Barkley?

With all that said, I've picked a track from each of Rolling Stone's top 50. Feel free to blame both me and the glossy rock & roll magazine of record. This was a much bigger challenge than I thought it was going to be, and left me a little deflated at the state of print-based music media. Be kind.
