Moving in to a new house (or apartment) is always a challenge. It is a carthatic moment that changes not only our outlook on life, but also fundamentally alters our postal address. There is something refreshing about setting up that first bed, TV, couch or cooking that first meal in a new kitchen. Over the years there have been some incredible home songs, who could ever forget - Wherever I lay My Hat (That's My Home) from Paul Young? or Take Me Home Country Roads by John Denver? Thankfully, you won't find these songs here.
1. Houses - WEDDINGS, PARTIES, ANYTHING
A song about a person who’s sick of living with the share house set, and now only wants to live with that special someone, but is the feeling reciprocal? Great lyrics by one of the best Aussie songwriters around - Mickey Thomas.
2. This Must be the Place (Naive Melody) - TALKING HEADS
The subtitle for this song is ‘naïve melody’ and David Byrne delivers a melody that hooks as well as intrigues. A song that allows us to realise that home is more than just the possessions around you.
3. Our house - Crosby Stills Nash and Young
A mighty fine combination of super artists join together in a very beautiful song about the idea of space. Who could ever go past the line ‘with two cats in the yard, life used to be so hard - now everything is easy coz of you'.
4. Palm Of Your Hand - CAKE
This is a song about tearing down new lives and starting again, however there’s always a melancholic sadness in this process. Cake captures these feelings fantastically.
5. In The Jailhouse Now - THE SOGGY BOTTOM BOYS
A song about a different style of house, and one I don’t think many of us want to see.
6. Subterranean Homesick Blues - BOB DYLAN
Not really about being homesick, or being subterranean, Bob Dylan’s voice and rambling lyrics make this song a great listening experience. I love the line 'the pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles'
7. Weather With You - CROWDED HOUSE
It was inevitable to choose a track by Crowded House in this compilation, and of course the obvious was 'Better Be Home Soon', but I think this song speaks about moving and taking the moment or the feelings you have with you wherever you go
8. The Letter - THE BOXTOPS
What is a box top? Some 50s thing I'm told. Anyway, the idea behind this song is about a guy going home because of some very nice correspondence.
9. Pink Houses - JOHN MELLENCAMP
Although John (before Cougar) Mellencamp's brand of down on the farm close to hicksville music isn't exactly current right now, I still love the social commentary in this very angry song. Yes, you can have a house, but at what price?
10. Our House - MADNESS
The kings of the SKA sound, Madness flourished in the 80s with their pork pie hats and homo-erotic album covers. This song is a whimsical memory about houses and families.
11. The Long Way Home - SUPERTRAMP
I always love the name of this band, and this song surely is about missing out on something because of the road (not?) taken.
12. Birdhouse In Your Soul - THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS
Don’t ask me what this song means, but it's as catchy as hell.
13. Burning Down The House - Talking Heads
Yes, the second David Byrne / Talking Heads composition here (surely they wrote more house related songs than any one else?) this song not only examines realtionships it also gives some excellent safety tips
