[Updated on February 28, 2007] I am currently traveling around in Australia and hadnt been to a proper gig since last summer! The mighty Kasabain were in town last week, the highlight being 'Club Foot' during the encore and it got me thinking of the best songs I can remember seeing live!
#2 in a close call but I am going to give it The Music, Reading Festival 2003 when they played the Getaway! They were my fav band of the weekend and I can remember going nuts to this song.
#3 Probably one of the best gigs I have been to, seriously was to see BRMC a few years back just before the 2nd album. They played for over 2 hrs and were so good. Loud, cool, great crowd, right down the front. The highlight was the frurry of What Ever Happened to My Rock and Roll!
#4 Graham Coxon, if you get the chance go see him! A couple of years back at Reading festival he was on the 2nd 'Radio 1' stage at the same time as The Darkness were on the Main stage and the then new boys Kasabian were on the 3rd 'Carling Stage'. 40'000 people for some reason choose to watch the Darkness, 5'000 crammed the Carling to catch Kasabian leaving a smaller than usualy crowd at the Radio 1 tent. Truely their lose! Having seen Coxon before I knew I made the right choice! His is amazing. In between songs this shy man whispers and mumbles into the microphone, whilst awkwardly lookign at the floor, then during songs explodes into this crazy performer jumping around, spinning round on the floor and throwing his guitar about! Also, an amazing guitartists. Watching his shows entertain on all sorts of levels! Spectacualr is always a highlight.
#5 Murder song builds up slowly to a higlhy energetic and powerful chorus whcih live is always carzy, its mint!!!
#6 I got into Radiohead without really realising. I would often listen to them on my ipod or stick the album on, but never saw myslef as a big enough fan to see them live. They played this years V fest and I nealry missed them again, but a mate ended up getting a few tickets of a certain auction site so a car of us went down. It was one of teh best live sets i have seen by far. 2+2=5 is a big favourite of mine and live it did not disapoint! About 1min 50 into the tarck when Thom brakes into his powerful scream of 'you have not been paying attention', brilliant!
#7 I have seen Jack and Meg 3 times, its a close call between when they headlinded the saturday night Reading festival 2004 and Bridlington gig which is the same the DVD shot in Blackpool was realeased from for my fav...I think Brid tips it for its intimacy. As their biggest comercial success, Seven Nation might seem an obvious choice, but you cant beat 5'000 singing along 'dow, dow dow dow, dow dow, dowwww' and jumping up and down going nuts! Also for Jack's perfection in playing it. He was off stage for ages tuning his guitar until he was happy with it, it was worth the wait it sounded perfect!
#8 This song is actually not really one of my top Oasis songs, but live it just cant be beaten. Having seen Oasis live a few times, in a close toss up beaten this and another big crowd pleaser, the singalong of Champagne Supernova, I would say this just tips it. Noel stops singing and lets the 50'000 crowd take control of vocals for the chorus.......it sounds amazing and gives you hairs on the back of your neck.
#9 'I Wanna Be Adored' is actually a Stone Roses song if your looking for it, where Brown was the bands lead singer. Having gone solo back in the mid 90s, for almost a decade Brown had never played Roses song in his live sets. Then in the summer of 2003 this all changed when a unexpecting crowd where treated to a set full of Roses classics during a big out door show. I saw him in Leeds that October, very excited to finally see these songs live having been to young to catch the Roses in their prime. We were nervous he woudlnt play them again and his outdoor show was a one off, but when on his 2nd song I heard the beautiful, brilliant bass line build up of 'I Wanna Be Adored', one of my favourite songs ever, I was exstatic. I dont know how to describe it, it was incredable.
#10 Having seen Doves live a few times I can say they always put on a great show, but the highlight is always the fantstic Pounding, maybe even better live than it is on CD.
#11 Kula Shaker may not be the best band ever, but they have some great songs and as a 13 year old or whatever I was, I was quite a fan. They reformed last year and to see this song live (one of my fav songs as a teenager!) was wicked!
#12 A Smiths songs rather than a Mozza solo recording, apparently this Smiths fans favourite was one of the bands songs he never did in his solo shows. At Reading a few years back Morrissey was on just before the headliners and after someone (I forget who now) who had been very average with their sound all over the place. Morrissey's opening song was 'How Soon is Now?'. The sound was great, (you can't help but love that bending guitar rift!) he sung it perfectly and the crowd full of die hard Smiths fans went wild. A very enjoyable and memorable live experience.
#13 This song was the encore when I saw the Super Fury Animals last year. They came on stage dress up in wierd and wild costumes (including a dog, a spaceman and a bear amoung other things!) and did this song for about 10 minutes, thats a lot of 'Fucks'. Great great song!
#14 This song I am thinking of was from Finsbury park about 5 years back now now when I went to see Oasis. The Charlatans supported. The other support bands throughout the day had been ok but not really caused much excitment, then The Charlatans came on about 7ish and the crowd went wild, I mean CRAZY wild, almost as wild as they went 90mins later when Oasis strolled on stage. This was the opener if my memory serves me correctly!
#15 And finally (well done if your are still reading!!) I was lucky enough to catch the Libertines in the earlierier days before Pete got kicked out of the band and become the man we see in 'Hello' magazine these days. The conection Pete and Carl had on stage and the punk energy of the band and conection they had with the crowd was magiacal.
