[Updated on February 4, 2008] In Greek mythology, the Pantheon consisted of what the Greeks considered to be the twelve greatest gods. This list is made in recognition of the remarkable efflorescence that rock music achieved in Britain. Although rock music was born in the United States, it had some of its foremost realization across the Atlantic; from the exquisite pop of the Beatles and aggressive raunch of the Stones, up to today with the bold experimentation of Radiohead. And just as the Greek Pantheon had twelve gods, I have included twelve bands or artists that both have proven influential and also best represent the greatness of British rock music: The Beatles, Black Sabbath, The Clash, David Bowie, Elton John, Eric Clapton, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, and The Who.
