Gene Chandler
Most know him for the 1962 hit "Duke of Earl," but the Chicago singer and songwriter continued on with a good decade's worth of relatively weightier material, often written by or with Curtis Mayfield. His expressive vocals -- at times reminiscent of Sam Cooke -- were especially well suited to ballads and shag-friendly, mid-tempo shuffles.
