Dr. Hook started out as Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. They scored a minor hit in 1972 with the country rock novelty "Cover of Rolling Stone," and their early work was marked by crude humor and a sort of Flamin' Groovies-gone-country sound and aesthetic. Children's author and Playboy cartoonist Shel Silverstein wrote all the songs on their 1971 debut.
